About this event
A practical discussion for legal leaders on authorisation, supervision and qualification – who can do what, and what comes next.
Who is authorised to do what in your legal team — and what do supervision and qualification mean in practice?
Legal teams are made up of people with different qualifications, experience, regulatory status and levels of responsibility. For those leading law firms and in-house legal teams, understanding who is authorised to undertake particular activities, what work can be delegated or carried out under supervision, and what effective supervision should look like is increasingly important.
In this free online event, Lynne Squires and Lorna Baldry will explore authorisation, supervision and qualification within legal teams.
We will look at:
- the regulatory framework around reserved legal activities
- the difference between qualification and authorisation
- who may undertake work under supervision
- where responsibility sits when work is delegated
- what effective supervision can look like in practice
- the factors leaders should consider when deciding how supervision arrangements should work within their team
- how qualifications and professional development can support capability, progression and future authorisation
We will also consider some of the practical questions legal employers are asking, including:
Who within our team is authorised to do what?
What can be delegated, and under what supervision?
How should the experience, competence and workload of the people involved influence supervision arrangements?
How many people can one person realistically and effectively supervise?
Where might further qualification or authorisation help both the individual and the organisation?
The aim of the session is not to provide a one-size-fits-all answer, but to help legal leaders understand the issues, ask the right questions about their own teams and identify where further development, qualification or advice may be needed.
There will also be an opportunity to hear about different qualification and progression routes available to legal professionals and to consider how these may support the future development of your team.
This is an information and discussion event and does not provide individual legal or regulatory advice.
